New Haven High Rise Project Progresses

Suzio Supplying Concrete for Apartment Complex Construction

NEW HAVEN, CONN. –While we patiently await economic improvements, downtown New Haven continues to be expanded and repaired. Recently ground has been broken on 360 State Street for a residential high rise which The L. Suzio Concrete Company of Meriden has begun pouring concrete for.

“We have been very fortunate amidst the current recession by being in the right place at the right time,” said Len Suzio who is The L. Suzio Companies president. “Developers have been moving forward with downtown expansions and renovations, while our product remains consistent and appreciated by contractors working in the area.”

The work is being overseen by general contractor Suffolk Construction of Massachusetts. The apartment building will span 32 stories high and cover the whole block of State, Chapel, and Orange Street. This was originally the landmark Shartenberg Department Store address.

The site was turned into a parking lot during its post department store days. Upon it’s completion in late 2010, 500 rental units will await occupancy there, including studios, 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments. It also will feature a grocery store, other retail, a parking garage, and an early childhood education center.

Time will not be wasted in making these plans come to fruition as Suzio has been supplying mass amounts of concrete throughout the winter season.

“One of the advantages to our industry is that we can supply concrete year round,” said Suzio. “Technology has made it so that we can operate regardless of most winter weather conditions.”

According to its developer and architect Becker and Becker, the building will stretch 700,000 square feet. A block away from the New Haven Green and across the street from the State Street train station, it is believed to be the largest private development project in New Haven’s history, and the greenest large-scale residential building in Connecticut.

The L. Suzio York Hill Companies have been assisting in the development of Central and Southern Connecticut since 1898. Besides its concrete plants in New Haven and Wallingford, the businesses headquarters are located in Meriden on 975 Westfield Road where a third ready-mix operation, asphalt plant, and trap rock quarry can be found. In 2005 the companies were selected for the “Founders award” by Business New Haven.
