Flowable Fill
This material can be used in place of compacted borrowed fill for applications including bedding and backfill for utility trenches or retaining walls, paving subbase, and bridge abutments. Underground structures to which this product can also be applied include abandoned tanks, basements, tunnels, mines and sewers.
For cost effective, safety, and performance related reasons, flowable fill is an alternative to any other kind of backfill. It can often reduce in place costs due to it being:
- Non-settling
- Self leveling
- Quick drying
- Non-segregating
- Easy to excavate
- Requiring less personnel to handle it
In terms of safety benefits, flowable fill can be applied without workers having to enter the trench, thus avoiding the danger of possible cave-ins. The performance of this material is best evaluated by its easy placement, along with its relative strength compared to standard backfill materials.
